How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big, Scott Adams

  1. The book has multiple great ideas about how to think about productivity, but I believe the main one comes from the quote "Goals are for idiots". Scott explains that systems are much more important than goals themselves. He believes that it is a better pursuit to be constantly working on a system that will get you to you goals rather than the goals themselves. Scott stats that goals are very limiting, and that people who focus on their system rather then the goals are happier because they can focus on daily wins. At the same time he believes goal oriented people are losers because whole they still have goals, they still haven't won.

  1. The book connected with me because much like the course, it's very focused on the process of your achievements and development of skills necessary for them. We have done many activities and lectures focused on the how, which is something I think Scott could appreciate. In one of the main points in his book he brings up "decisions vs wishes". He States that deciding is way better than wishing. His steps to deciding are:
  • Find what you want
  • Find the price for what you want
  • Pay the price

3. If I had to make an exercise for the class it would be to pick a goal of theirs and design a skill developing system to replace it. The system would of course result in the completion of the goal, but it would give the class a way to focus on the skills needed for that goal daily.

4. The biggest surprise was the "Goals are for idiots" quote. It of course made more sense after further explanation, but that mindset just there me off guard. I'm always so used to hearing how important goal setting is, but I really do like Scott's point of view. Another I actually expected was to hear about a lot of failures, but the hardships both health wise and professionally where greater than I imagined. Scott really does have a strong will. He's a lot more than just a good entrepreneur, he's got loads of resilience.

  1. You are the second blog I’ve read to have read this book. Your review also makes me believe that the book is very interesting. I feel as though I can gleam a lot of insight into fulfilling my goals if I read this book. It’s ironic how I said goals, but that is because I don’t really agree with the negativity for goal creation.

  2. This review was very informative of the book you have just read. This book was also something I read and I truly liked what the book had to say about failures and how they are more beneficial than we give them credit for. It is also shown that sometimes, goals are not we need, but systems instead can have a better impact instead and should be tried out instead. All in all, a good book to read and would definitely recommend to read.
